Dr. Alonzo Clifford Cohen Jr., 88, formerly of Athens, died Monday, April 17, 2000. Dr. Cohen received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Auburn University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Michigan. He was a professor of statistics at the University of Georgia for 31 years, retiring as professor Emeritus. He was a member of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Mathematical Association of America, International Statistical Institute, and Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi and other honorary organizations. He served as a consultant to NASA in the Apollo program. He was a U.S. Army veteran, retiring as colonel in the Army Reserves. He made numerous mission trips with the Baptist Partnership Evangelism Program. He was a member of Wynnbrook Baptist Church, Columbus. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Wynnbrook Baptist Church. Burial will be in Chapel of the Pines Mausoleum, Parkhill Cemetery, with military honors. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Armour Cohen; three daughters, Judy Friedlander and Debbie Wilson, both of Columbus, and Susan Anderson, Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Virginia Applewhite, Brookhaven, Miss.; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wynnbrook Baptist Church Building Fund. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. today at Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home.
