Heinrich began using the nickname Henry once establishing a home in the states.
The 1880 census indicated that he suffered from gallbladder disease. However, he did not pass away until 25 years later.
At the time of his death at his home near Batchtown, Henry was 80 years, 10 months and 8 days old.
He was survived by his wife, Rachael; 1 son, Henry H. Johnes; 2 daughters, Caroline Kinder and Lizzie Franke; and a number of grandchildren.
Henry's wife, Rachael, passed away in 1908 and was buried next to him.
