Mrs. Gertrude Caroline Strain Awbrey
Mrs. Gertrude Caroline Strain Awbrey, 94, of Dalton, died Sunday June 4, 2000 at her residence. She was born July 23, 1905 in Carbondale, GA (Whitfield County) and grew up in Hill City, Ga (Gordon County). She graduated from Calhoun High School and graduated from LaGrange College in 1926 with a B.A. Degree and being an honor student. She majored in English literature, was president of the LaGrange College student body her senior year. After graduation, she taught English and drama at Handley High School in Roanoke, Ala. whre she met Austin Awbrey and they were married in 1928.
In 1933, she and Austin moved to Hill City, Ga where he was headed to work in the growing Redwine and Strain bedspread business and their children were born after the move to Georgia.
In 1944 the Awbrey family moved to Dalton, Ga. and she was involved in numerous church and community activities, president of the PTA, in the same time while runinng a busy and loving household.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dalton where she was very active serving as Missionary Society president for more than one term and over the years was a Sunday School teacher of the Philathea class. She was a long time member of the Lesche Club where she also served as president. She was also one of the founders of The Friendship House.
Gertrude Awbrey deeply loved her family and her roots. For many years she was family historian for the Strain family. Planning for and attending the annual family reunion was one of her joys in life.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Austin Mason Awbrey, in 1996.
Survivors include her children, Trudy Wahle of Ocala, Fla., Janet Nelson of Atlanta, Jim and Dunja Awbrey of Atlanta, and Nancy and Joe Brittain, of Atlanta, sister Hilda Strain Bryant of Dalton and brother Frank Strain of Dalton, 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Services are today at 11 a.m. at the chapel of First Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Harragan officiating. Graveside servicies are today at 2 p.m. (CT) at Cedar Wood Cemetery in Roanoke, Ala.
The family received friends at the funeral home Monday.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 827, Dalton, GA 30722-0827.
