Jacob was the son of John George Hake and his wife Catherine Wortman. Jacob fought in the Civil War serving with the 128th OVI Co. I from Niles, OH.

He married Anna Barbra "Annie" Pfiffer on 21 July 1865 in Warren, Trumbull, OH. She was the daughter of Nicholas and Eva Pfiffer. Annie and her parents were natives of Germany.
