She was born Sept. 2, 1929, in Hoopeston, a daughter of John Everett and Nora Belle Murphy York. She married Leslie Dale Winter on April 9, 1949, in Hoopeston. She married John Lewis Howk on June 25, 1959, in Melvin. He died June 18, 2000.
Survivors include a son, Bruce William Winter; three daughters, Jane Winter Clark, Carolyn Lee Howk and Jill Kathryn Gengler; a brother, Shirley York and four grandchildren.
Mrs. Howk graduated from John Greer High School in 1947. She was a secretary for State Farm Insurance Co. in Bloomington and then became a homemaker. She was a member of Disciples of Christ Church of Hoopeston. She enjoyed gardening, genealogy, studying the Civil War, collecting quilts and glassware, and supporting the Champaign County Humane Society.
