Martin Detterman was a native of Tours, Texas and had lived in the Tours-West area most of his life. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of the Assumption in West.

On September 12th of 1918, when Martin Detterman registered for the WW I draft he was working as a farm laborer for Joseph Westmoreland in West, McLennan Co., Texas. He was 38 years old and he gives his birth date as February 10th, 1880. He lists his wife as Mary, and they lived in West. He signed his name Martin Deitterman. He is described as tall and slender with blue eyes and brown hair. The Registrar was F. A. Ray. He registered at Local Board, McLennan County No., West, Texas.

Martin raised and trained horses for awhile. His daughter, Josephine Detterman Berger said he had some beautiful horses and her dad was really good at working with the horses. He trained horses for a lot of people.

Martin Detterman was very sharp minded up until his death on July 7, 1967. He could name everyone who lived between West and Tours and which house they lived in. He had been a hard worker and had worked as a hay bailer for awhile. He went and helped anybody who needed help in bailing. This is probably why he knew everyone so well and where they lived.
