Willard was the son of Alexis (Elexes) Bristol and Mary Barlow Bristol. He married Catherine Betsey Holman on 4 July 1865 in Savanah, Illinois. They had 11 children:

Hannah (1869 - 1874)(died at age 5 of diphtheria)

The family moved to Shelby County, Iowa from Carroll County, Illinois in 1879. An 1884 map shows Willard Bristol owning 80 acres in Section 26 of Polk Township, Shelby County, Iowa.
A Shelby County Republican newspaper article dated 21 Nov 1889 states that Willard "died very suddenly of quinsy. He was confined to the house but two days."
