On 30 Dec 1863, Sacramento, California; Powell Bingham enlisted as a Sergeant with Company H of the 1st California Cavalry. Powell received a disability discharge when the unit mustered out of service on 13 Mar 1866 at Fort Craig, New Mexico.

The 1st California Cavalry mission was to control supplies entering from Mexico to support the Confereracy. They were part of the "California Column". On 15 Apr 1862, they fought the only Civil War battle in Arizona at Picacho Pass against an advance party of Colonel Baylor's Texan Rangers.

On 4 Apr 1879, Powell Bingham filed for his military pension. His unit was recorded as "H 1 Cal Cav" (Pension Card).

In 1880, P. Bingham (B: ~1828, Pennsylvania) was a blacksmith at the Magdalena Mines in Socorro County, New Mexico (1880 Census).
