"He was born on October 10, 1918 on the same farm where he spent his entire life. He was baptized October 13, 1918 at Trinity Lutheran church in Friedensau where he was also confirmed on May 8, 1932.
"On June 15, 1954 he was married to Paula Ahrens at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Davenport by Pastor D. F. Luebke.
"Harvey farmed his entire life after gradually taking over the family farm from his parents. He took a great deal of pride in his farming and his animals, continuing until his retirement in 1980. Although retired, he enjoyed helping both sons in their farming and livestock operations until the time of his death.
"The chruch was an important part of his life, and he attended faithfully. During his years at Trinity, he served in many capacities, including elder and trustee as well as singing in the choir. He was also a member of the Lutheran Laymen's League. In 1978 he joined Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler where he continued to worship regularly.
"He leaves Paula, his wife of over 50 years; two sons, Darrel and Merlin, both of rural Carleton; daughters-in-law, Carolyn and June Degner; five grandchildren, .... a great grandchild, Tyler Degner of Merrillville, Ind.; in addition to many other relatives and friends.
"His parents, Herbert and Dorothea ([F]inkenberg) Degner, and his brothers, Herbert C. and Robert F. all preceded him in death.
"Services, conducted by Pastor Harold Laursen, were held at Peace Lutheran church at 2:00 p.m. on January 26.
"Pallbearers were Rev. Robert Degner, Robert Ahrens, Loren Ahrens, Jim Ahrens, Raymond Grummert, and Delvin White. Burial was at Peace Lutheran Cemetery following the services.
"Price Funeral Home of Hebron was in charge of the arrangements."
