A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Middletown (Biglerville), Adams County, February 27, 1865, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg March 6 as a private with the 103rd Pennsylvania Infantry with the second organization of Co. A. When the regiment left Harrisburg, he was left behind ill and soon transferred to the army hospital in York. He is listed as a deserter to date July 21, 1865, but a War Department investigation undertaken in 1896 revealed that he had been discharged by surgeon's certificate June 25, 1865, although he received pay through July 12.
He married Elizabeth Yohe and fathered Francis Coulson (b. 06/29/72) and Harvey Nicolas (b. 11/08/75). In 1890, he lived in Menallen Township, Adams County, but died in West York, York County, at age 75-6-19 from "apoplexy" with "Bright's disease" a contributing factor.
