John was born May 15, 1943, in Rexburg, to Vernon C. and Mildred E. Mortensen. He grew up in the Sugar City- Salem area and graduated from Sugar City High School. He went on to earn a degree in business from Ricks College.
He served in the Army National Guard from 1960-68, where he acquired the rank of E-4.
He married JuDee A. Spaulding in 1971. They were later divorced in 1996. He married Linda G. Sundberg in 2001.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, going fishing, gardening and cars. John's attitude about life and his respect of everyone made you want to be a better person.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; daughter, Stephanie (Michael) Hay of Idaho Falls; son, Richard (Julie) Mortensen of Redding, Calif.; daughter, Kimberley (Richard) Moss of Lawton-Fort Hill, Okla.; Tyler (Stephanie) Jacobson of Spangdahelm, Germany; sister, Uvon (David) Murdoch of Idaho Falls; brother, Arlen (Kay) Mortensen of Pocatello; sister, Sharon (Boyd) Summer of Rigby; brother, Jerry Mortensen of Coeur d'Alene; brother, Michael Mortensen of Las Vegas; and six grandchildren, Jordan, Michael John, Corbin Christopher, Alexander, Courtney and Emily. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Mildred.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 18, at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th St. in Idaho Falls. Interment, with Military Rites performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Team, will be in the Archer Cemetery.
