Born Aug. 6, 1930, in Nelson County, he was the son of the late Willis Elmer and Gabe Johnson Ballowe. He was a self-employed master plumber, electrician, HVACR and gas fitter. Mr. Ballowe was also the former owner and operator of Waymike Hardware and proprietor of Red Rooster Produce on U.S. 29 south. He was a loving and devoted husband and father.
Mr. Ballowe was a U.S. Army veteran and was injured during the Korean War, while serving as a paratrooper. He was also proud to have served as a scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 10 at Memorial United Methodist Church. He attended Harvest Worship Center.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Humie, Bootsie and Vernon, and three sisters, Carrie, Viola and Ann.
Mr. Ballowe is survived by two sons, Robert L. "Robbie" Ballowe Jr. and his wife, Waylene, of Huddleston, and Mike W. Ballowe of Lynchburg; three sisters, Lucille Baldwin and Berksie Adams, both of Coleen, and Virginia Watkins of Hawaii; two granddaughters, Ashley Dare Ballowe and Sommer E. McIntyre and husband, Justin; two great-grandchildren, Winter Gwen Ballowe and Hunter Lenwood Mason; and Mr. Ballowe's special friend, Virginia Eblen.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Wayne L. Murphy. Interment with military honors by American Legion Post 16 will follow in the Huddleston Church of God of Prophecy Cemetery, Huddleston.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009, at the funeral home.
