Before he was 18 years old he went to Bellefonte, Pa., to learn the milling trade with his brother Calvin. Two years later he went out to Bloomington, Ill., to engage in milling, and while there resided with his relatives, the family of David Gerberich. After eighteen months he returned to Bellefonte and entered the employment of T.R. Reynolds & Co., in the Phoenix Mills. Mr. Gerberich ran mills at Oak Hall and Pine Grove Mills in Center County, Birmingham and Morrell in Huntingdon County, and at Arch Springs in Blair County, Pa. He then again returned to the place of his birth and took to farming, at which occupation he remained for a period of eight years. He was then appointed deputy sheriff by Frank B. Boeshore, who had just been elected sheriff for the county. As a result of this he moved to the city of Lebanon, Jan. 1, 1883, and occupied the jail residence together with Mr. Boeshore and his family. He served as deputy sheriff for six years, and during his last year in office assisted in the execution of William Showers for the murder of his grandchildren, a crime still remembered in Lebanon County. At the time of his death he was engaged in the insurance business. He was an elder in Zion's Church and for many years a teacher in the Sabbath School. [History of the Gerberich Family in America]
