The script writing in the Descriptive Book shows that his name indeed was Thomas Burton. However in the OFFICIAL ROSTER OF OHIO SOLDIERS, VII, pp. 527 and 768, his name appears as Thomas Bulson. In a book, Members of the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, PERSONAL REMINISCENCES AND EXPERIENCES, PUBLISHED IN 1909, his name is spelled "Bolson" on page 419. Then, the name on his original headstone read "Butson", which appears on his Service Record General Index Card. Perhaps these spelling variants were all due to errors in transcription.
The OFFICIAL ROSTER OF OHIO SOLDIERS further states that he died at Adairsville, Georgia, May 27, 1864 of illness and that he was buried at Marietta, Georgia. There are six 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry soldiers buried at Marietta National Cemetery and only one was in Company F, buried in Section A, Grave 87 that had to be Thomas Burton. However that Company F soldier's name on the headstone was "Butson." This was clearly incorrect so in 2006 a new headstone was requested to replace the "Butson" stone with one bearing the name of "Thomas Burton, Co. F, 103 Ohio Inf.," but the National Cemetery System (N.C.S.) would not put his date of death on it. This modern-style headstone was set by May 4, 2006. However, on its own volition, the N.C.S. replaced that new headstone with the retro-headstone in the style of the early 1900s sometime after February 12, 2007. Why a perfectly good headstone was replaced is inexplicable. It may have been done in error.
It should be mentioned that Thomas Burton does not appear in the U.S. Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865. His compiled military record from the National Archives may disclose additional information. No family member applied for any type of suvivor's pension from the War Department. Many letters, diaries, and printed accounts of the 103rd's soldiers and veterans have not unveiled any incidental information about Thomas Burton, therefore there are no family links as of this time.
