LAST SPRINGFIELD VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR PASSES AWAY....Springfield, April 16 Charles Downs, Springfield's last Civil War Veteran and the town's oldest resident, who died at the home of his granddaughter, was born in Carroll, ME. He later moved to Cherryfield, where he lived for a short time: Then returned to Springfield where he spent the remainder of his life.
Charles Downs enlisted in the Civil War on Sept 10, 1861, as a private in Co D, 11th Maine Infantry. He was discharged on June 12, 1863: and reenlised in Co I, First Maine Heavy Artillary the last of Nov 1863, and was discharged 1865, on account of a single shot in his right side. While in the army he was in the battles of Gettysburg, Bull Run and a number of other important battles.
For the past four years Mr Downs, has been confined to his bed, where he was well cared for by his granddaughter, Mrs James McAlpine.
His near surviving relatives are his granddaughter, Mrs. McAlpine and her husband, two great-grandchildren, Mildred and James McAlpine.
