The son of Joshua & Jane (Boyd) Humes, he married Leah Row and fathered Mary (b. @1860), James Wendel (b. @1862), and Annie Leah (b. 06/29/73, d. 05/31/77). In 1860, he was a shoemaker living in Reed Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. The 1860 census claims he was then thirty-five years old.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted on Duncan's Island, Dauphin County, August 7, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 16 as a private with Co. C, 136th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.

In 1890, he resided in Penn Township, Perry County.
