John was son of Joseph Johns and Susan Goodnight. His family moved to an area that became northeast Christian Co. when he was a small boy. He married Martha Tressiaa "Patsy" Martin 2 Apr 1855 in Greene Co., MO. Served in the Greene and Christian County Home Guard Alred's Co. I at the time of The Battle of Wilson's Creek when this unit guarded Springfield. He also served in the 72nd Enrolled Missouri Militia Co. H. John and Patsy were the parents of 10 children
