Peter studied law in Abingdon, Virginia and became a lawyer, but gave up the profession of law and became a Planter, he grew wealthy and owned many slaves.
He moved early in life from Virginia to Winchester, Tennessee. In 1831 he moved to the Decherd Plantation and founded the town of Decherd, Tennessee when he and his brothers built the first railroad (N.C. and St. L) in 1850 for the state into Winchester and Nashville through it.
They lost a great amount of money building this railroad across the mountains into Nashville, and used their slaves to build a tunnel through the mountains.
Peter Decherd left Tennessee in 1854 and went to where Waco, Texas is now and bought 1 1/2 Leagues of land in the Brazos Bottoms. He had seven years of drought and sold out, moved to Crawford County, Arkansas in 1868.
He served as Justice of the Peace in Alma, Arkansas until he died.
