Fourth child of Thomas and Mary Jeanette (Pigott) McKnight. He married a widow in 1854: Mrs. Hannah French Hamilton (Tarver). Dr. McKnight was born in South Carolina and is buried in Liberty, MS in the McKnight family plot. He was a member of the Liberty Baptist church. His wife Hannah was a member of the Presbyterian church for 59 years. Dr. McKnight was too old to serve in the Civil War. He stayed at home and though old and ill, helped with the women and children. Dr. McKnight's youngest son Charles said that his father had asthma so badly he wore a beard, long hair and wool shirts, hoping it would help. Charles slept at the foot of his bed so he could kick his father when he became overcome and could not speak. Dr. McKnight's three sons were, in birth order:
Theodore Jr., Hamilton and Charles.
- From handwritten record by Alma Lea Gardner McKnight

Note: The original framed lithograph from circa 1886 could not be handed down in the family and was donated to the Mississippi Department of Archives & History in Jackson, MS for safekeeping.
