The caption for the small article on the side says "This is an extract from the article published in "The Braxton County Democrat". Sept 30 1937 written by Allen Morgan Berry grandson of Allen Berry, Thornton's brother." The full article contains the small one in the bottom center column. It begins: 10th Thornton Berry married first a Miss Bell, whose father at the time owned the land known as the Bowling Green and on which the Sutton airport is now located..... (large article on the side does not list the name of the author).
They had 3 known Berry children:
William, abt 1836 WIA in Sumpter's Cavalry
Mary, abt 1842 (Montgomery Sellers)
Betty, abt 1856 (John Cleveland)
On the 1850 Augusta Co., VA census, I found farmer Thornton Berry, 39; Rachael Berry, 38; William C Berry, 14 and Mary E Berry, 8, all VA born.
Rachel died two years later in 1852 of unknown month. Later, Thornton married Nancy Lessley, AKA Leslie (Bettie's marriage record). On the 1860 N Subdivision, Burke's Mill, Augusta Co., VA census, I found farmer Thornton Berry, 49, with $11,750 in real estate; Nancy Berry, 46; Mary E Berry, 18; Bettie S Berry, 4; T J Berry, 21 and domestic Betsy Langford, 35, all VA born.
Rachel Berry, wife of Thorton (sic) Berry, born April 28, 1812, died ____ 25, 1852. Old Section. Taken from Inscriptions from Augusta Stone Church (oldest cemetery), Ft. Defiance, Augusta Co., Virginia, by Mrs. C. F. Rudolph, Washington, DC., 1953.
Toots kindly shared Rachel was Thornton's first wife, and believes she died in Virginia. "She was his first wife and buried there so one may assume she died there."
