Mrs. J. P. Smith

Mrs. Mollie Smith, wife of the late James P. Smith, died Thursday, September 2, at her home (edit: 510 West Sevier Street) with her niece, Mrs. K. E. Gilbert, in Benton. she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Julia Williamson and Miss Lillian Hutcheson, and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services were held in the home Friday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. J. M. Hamilton, assisted by her nephew, Rev. C.W, Richards. Pallbearers were Bob Carrick, Frank Parsons, Bun Wright, Ernest Scott, Ernest Darnell, Sr., and Howard Perrin.

Molly Hutcheson was born in Green county, Georgia, in 1859, the eldest daughter of Charles R Hutcheson and Electra Kimbrough. She attended Shorter college in ( ), Georgia, taught school in Georgia, and two years in Saline county in the Crabtree neighborhood.

The Hutcheson family, with the grandparents, the Jeff Wrights, moved to Arkansas in 1881. She married J. P. Smith in 1882. He had a store on the present site of the Imp Theatre; later he moved the store into the brick building which is now occupied by the Ernest Parker Drug Co.

The Smiths bought the lots on Sevier street, cut down the virgin oaks there, and used the timber to build the home in which both lived until death. He died in 1920. She loved this home so much and had to stay home these last years due to infirmity and age. She joined the old Walker church in Green county, Georgia when she was seven years old. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living member of the Benton Methodist church. She was a charter member of the Woman's Missionary Society of the Little rock conference and was a delegate to the first annual Conference held in Prescott. She was an active church member as long as her health permitted. She was an asset to Benton and Saline county. Almost all her old friends had preceded her into the great beyond, but younger ones mourn her passing.
