He served his adopted country as a Second Lieutenant with the First Louisiana Volunteers from New Orleans in the war with Mexico. After the war he spent several years in northern California in Trinity and Siskiyou Counties. He then became one of the early pioneers of Idaho Territory. He was sergeant-at-arms of the legislature at the time of his death. He died from consumption at Harts' Hotel. Col. J. B. Sinclair, commanding, Fort Boise, gave permission for the old soldier to be buried in the cemetery enclosure at the barracks.

His name on his tombstone was carved as "Donahue". This was a mistake.
