James is the son of James Scudder & Sarah Elizabeth (Stoner) Chinn. He married Mary Elvina Gabriel on April 23, 1871 in Carroll County, Missouri. After 1910, he married Goldie Mae Owens, born 1887 in Carroll County, Missouri and died September 9, 1954 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Goldie married second to Samuel M. Ferguson on May 17, 1926, presumably after James Marvin Chinn died.

According to Arkansas Death Certificate #1395, James Marvin Chinn died 26 March 1926 in Little Rock, Pulaski Co., Arkansas at the State Hospital for the insane and old. His name of record there is John M. Chinn. His residence of 17 days was given as Lincoln, AR which is near his location in the 1920 Census. He was admitted to the State Hospital 7 March 1926. Date and place of birth given as 1850, IN (which agrees with other records). He was buried on the Hospital grounds. There are no monuments or other records and the Hospital website indicates that the graves were moved, perhaps more than once as the Hospital expanded. (Information from Howard Chinn).
