Martha Alice Huggins Chandler died on 1 April 1914 at home, having borne eleven children, and was buried in the Chandler family plot at Union Cemetery. She was never separated from her husband more than a week in their fourty years of marriage, and her children cannot recall that she ever spoke a word in anger. She was "an angel of mercy " to the sick and distressed of the countryside, white and black alike.
