Ann "Annie" J McChesney was the first daughter and third child of Robert McChesney and Elizabeth Johnston. She was born on 9 Feb 1799 in Augusta County, Virginia. Suspect the J for her middle name, was for Johnston, her locally famous relative and grandfather, Zachariah Johnston. At age 17 1/2, she married Colonel Isaiah McBride, 22 years older, on 27 Aug 1816.

They had 6 known McBride children:

John Johnston, 19 Mar 1818- 12 Jul 1879*, TX will probated 4 Jun 1881 (left land in TX & VA to 2 nephews and 1 niece) below
Mary W., 25 Dec 1818 (Wm Johnston Bell McChesney), below
Robert McChesney, abt 28 Jan 1821 (Eliz. Jane McNutt), below
Eliza Ann, 13 Jun 1823, died young, below
Ann J., about 1826 (no further record)
James Jackson, 24 Jan 1826 (M Eliz. McClung & Margaret Hanna Gibson), below

*Both John J and Mary W claim 1818 births in Mar and Dec. Gravestones contain errors as well. See brother Robert's bio regarding Capt John McBride (1912) and Capt J J McBride's obit.

In 1810, her father and "grandfather" John McBride lived close to each other.

Husband Isaiah died at age 53, leaving her a widow, with 4 children between the ages of 4 and 12. She was age 31. She never remarried.

On the 1840 Lexington, VA census, page 10, I found Mrs. ANN J. McBRIDE, with 22 persons: White males: 1 10-14; 1 15-19; 1 20-29; white females: 1 10-14; 1 30-39 (Ann); 1 70 to 79; and sadly 16 slaves: 10 males and 6 females, that formerly were her husbands and previous her father in laws up to 1821. Also on the same page 10 was John Reid (males 20-29, 1 10-14; females 2 under 5 and 1 20-29). Page 11, listed Andrew Reed and Christopher Reed. Page 9 had none.

On 12 Feb 1842, Ann's father Robert died. In his will he left "to daughter Ann McBride, already gave her portion of my estate plus $50." Six months later, on 21 Aug 1842, Ann's brother James McChesney, was killed by a mad man, a Mr. Reid who was a blacksmith and an overseer for Mrs. McBride. Both James and Ann lived on their father's ancestral estate. Then 6 years and 9 months later, her mother Elizabeth died on 14 Nov 1848.

MOST DISTRESSING AND HEARTRENDING OCCURRENCE. From the Lexington Gazette, August 25: We have rarely been more more deeply pained than we were at the relation of the casualty we are about to record, which took place in our own county, on Sunday last, in the vicinity of Brownsburg. A man by the name of Reid, a blacksmith and overseer for MRS. McBRIDE, who has been for some time past, we believe suspected of insanity, commenced on Sunday morning a work of destruction at which the imagination recoils in horror. He picked up one of his children and holding it by the feet smashed its soul; against a bedpost and threw it over a high porch, out of the house; he also mangled another very severely; we have not heard yet whether they are alive; his wife he next attacked, she fled and alarmed her neighbors. Several came and attempted to take him; he was armed with a bar of iron, with which he struck down a Mr. Stuart, and next attacked Capt. James McChesney, he struck him on the head and brought him to the floor, where he continued to beat him, until his scull (sic) was broken. He was then with great difficulty taken and confined. Mr. McChesney we are told got up and walked to the spring and washed himself, he was asked if he was seriously hurt, he replied that he did not know; a litter was brought to convey him home, where he died about 4 o'clock on the same day. Capt. McChesney has left a wife, with a large family and numerous friends and acquaintances (sic) to mourn over his sudden and distressing death. The author of this bloody tragedy is now confined in our jail. P.S. Since the above was written. We have heard that neither of Reid's children is yet dead, but little hope is entertained of their lives. Leesburg Genius of Liberty, Vol 26, #36, 3 Sept 1842 (see photo).

On the about Oct 1850 Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found Ann J. McBride, 47; farmer Robert M.McBride, 28; farmer James J. McBride, 23, with $20850 in real estate and (her motherless grandson) Zachariah McChesney, 5/12, all VA born. She is near her sister in law, the widow Frances McNutt McChesney and her family. "A. McBride" owned 8 slaves, 2 males and 6 females. Zachariah's mother Mary McBride McChesney (wife of Wm J B McChesney), died in Jan 1850.

On the 1860 Dist. 6, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found head of household Ann J. McBride, 34 (sic*), with $22,500 in real estate and $16,600 in personal property; farmer Jas Jackson McBride, 34; girls: Elizabeth Sweet, 12 and Therrussell Sweet, 10, all white and VA born. *Ann is his mother and her age is wrong, she did own their home.

Sadly, her son James was thrown from a horse and died May 30, 1872, only months before she died.

Her monument was recently cleaned by cousin HWH and kindly rephotographed, 12/2017. The older photo 12/2010, shows the little rocks steadying the tall monument at its base, and is in need of some repair work. See transcription below. She is buried in front of her uncle Zechariah Johnston's and her father in law John McBride's standing markers. It is seen in the 12/2017 photo of her cleaned monument. Note: a photo taken by the WPA in 1936 shows the west side of the New Providence cemetery at the Library of Virginia (VHI/P/24/0037 and 36) of a similar shot of her marker to the McNutt marker that looks like a chess rook. It was taken by James W McClung. Harry added a group shot on this site that is similar to it.
