Day trip to Milam County, July 6th 2016. Danny Grizzle and Bill Grubbs departed Longview 5am, returned 11pm. Over 500 miles total. Main stops: Port Sullivan Cemetery, Little River Baptist Church Cemetery, Oak Hill Cemetery. Plus Milam County Library, Courthouse, County Clerk, and Historical Association.

The graves of James and Sarah Lindsey, parents of William Jasper Lindsey. These are 2nd great grandparents to both myself and Bill Grubbs.

William was the most popular name for boys in the Lindsey family, which presents challenges to those studying events of their times. My great grandfather was called "Young Bill" during his years in Milam County and his uncle by the same name, James' brother William, buried just to the right of this picture, was known as "Old Bill." To complicate things further, James Lindsey's father, also resident in Milam County was also named William. The senior William Lindsey, my 3rd great grandfather, had 24 children by two wives. Many have sons or grandsons named William, including at least 2 more individuals with this given name buried in the immediate vicinity of James and Sarah seen here.

This is the generation caught up in the Civil War. One of my cousins has carefully traced James' service record through the war. He fought a numerous battles, but was miraculously never injured. By war's end, he was in Virginia nearby Appomattox Courthouse on the day Lee surrendered to Grant, though he was not among those present at that event.
