He used horses for farm labor and owned a share in an early threshing machine. Bill and Mabel also raised Guineas, turkeys, rabbits, chickens and sheep. In his younger days he was a messenger boy on horseback for the Eldergrove Telephone Exchange. He was a baseball pitcher for the Harpers Ferry Giants and he also trained horses.
He died of pneumonia at the Good Samaritan Home, Waukon, IA.
