Mr. Howes was a native of Wyoming county, New York, but in 1843 moved with his family to Decalb county, Ill., where he was married in 1861, eight children resulting from the union. In 1862 he enlisted in the 105th Illinois volunteer infantry. In 1883 he moved from Illinois to South Dakota, returning a year later and in 1884 moved to Olympia.

His brother, Edwin Howes, served in the 20th Illinois and also survived the war.
Another brother, Corp. Phillip Howes, who was also in the 105th died of wounds received at Resaca and is buried in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
