John William Covey was born 14 December 1874 in Morgan County, Illinois. His parents were John Francis Covey and Rhoda Ellen Helms Covey. He married Zulah Martha Fanning and they were the parents of two sons: Forrest Gilbert Covey (1902-1971) and Howard Russell Covey (1903-1970).

John was a farmer most of his life. He was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church. He also played the fiddle.

At the time of his death in 1953, he was survived by his wife, two sons: Forrest G. Covey of Peoria, and Howard R. Covey of Jacksonville; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; four brothers: Sanford Covey of Woodson; Robert J. Covey of Jacksonville; Hugh Covey of Jacksonville; and George Covey of Jacksonville; three sisters: Mrs. Anna England of Springfield; Mrs. Lydia Nunes of Chicago; and Mrs. Flora Myrick of Visalia, California.
