John Daniel Chaney was born and reared in Alba, Wood County, Texas, the third child and only son born to Robert Hiram "Bob" Chaney, 1875-1948 (son of John Chaney and Mary Allen Chaney of Texas) and Mary Caroline "Callie" Slater Chaney, 1889-1962 (daughter of Daniel B. Slater and Nannie E. Bell Slater.)
