Mrs. John S. Barstow
Melissa Lane was born in De Witt county, Illinois, November 12, 1856, and departed this life at her home in Little River, Kansas, Thursday morning, January 25, 1923, at the age of 66 years, 2 months and 13 days.
She came to Kansas and was married to John. S. Barsow on November 18, 1877. With the exception of four years, which were spent in Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Barstow lived in, or near, Little River. To their union were born six daughters, four of whom are living – Mrs. Mattie M. Cline of Hardtner, Kansas; Mrs. Dellie Carr of Mullinville, Kansas, (who was unable to be here on account of sickness); Mrs. Clara Riley and Miss Nannie Barstow, both of Little River. The two preceding their mother were Mrs. Lora Campbell and Inez, a girl of seven years. She is survived by her husband, four daughters, eighteen grandchildren, one great grandchild, and other relatives.
She was a good woman, a true and devoted companion, a loving mother, and a kind neighbor.
To the sorrowing husband, the daughters, to Irvine – the grandson in the home – and all the relatives, the community extends greatest sympathy in this time of sorrow.
The funeral services were conducted from the home in Little River by the Methodist pastor, W. W. Owen, on Saturday, January 27, at 2 o'clock p.m., after which the body was interred in Bean cemetery.
