Julia was born what is now Mercer Co., NJ--presumably in either West Windsor Twp., old Middlesex Co., or Nottingham Twp., old Burlington Co. She was the daughter of Christopher Vannest and Catharine Voorhies. She married Randal Hughes on 12 Dec. 1821, probably in Hamilton Square, old Burlington Co.* They had 12 children together, all linked below.

*The marriage was performed by Rev. Henry Perkins, pastor of the Presbyterian congregations of Allentown (in Upper Freehold Twp., Monmouth Co.) and Hamilton Square (then Nottingham Twp., Burlington Co.). Rev. Perkins' marriages were recorded in Monmouth County; however, this marriage probably took place in Hamilton Square/Nottingham.
