Ada Clements

BLAKELY - Ada Cromartie Clements of Morgan, GA, was known for her dignity, wisdom, and humor. She died on Saturday, May 23, 2009.

She was born on February. 23, 1916 in Dixie, GA, one of nine children of Adrian Alexander (Sandy) and Ada Bowen Cromartie. The family moved to Boston, GA during Ada's formative years. The family was active in the Presbyterian Church and had a passion for education. All but the eldest son, Byron, graduated from college as the elder siblings, in turn, helped their younger brothers and sisters reach their academic goals.

Educated at Georgia State College for Women (GSCW) in Milledgeville, Ada Cromartie Clements was a much-loved teacher of home economics, science, and Georgia history in schools in Morgan for several decades. She was a life-long learner and a voracious reader. She taught the Adult Women's Sunday School Class, Morgan Baptist Church, for over 30 years and was a member of the Willing Workers Missionary Society.

In 1947, Ada married Jerome Mansfield Clements, a farmer and later Sheriff of Calhoun County. Ada was predeceased by her husband; by her brothers, Byron, Edwin, Marion, and Adrian, all of whom served in WWII, as did her husband, and by her sisters, Gladys and Ina Mae. A sister, Mary Frances, died in infancy.

She is survived by her daughters: Laura Clements Dixon (Al), Diane Cromartie Clements (Marvin), Ina Elizabeth Clements; and by her son: Byron Jerome Clements.

Other survivors include her sister, Jacqueline Odom, niece Susan Jones and nephew Marion Odom; nephews Norman Cromartie, Eric Cromartie, and Edwin Adams, and niece Marjorie Neace.

Viewing will be from 1 to 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at Morgan Baptist Church. A graveside ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. (in the event of rain, the ceremony will be in the church.)

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Manry-Jordan-Hodges of Blakely.

The family requests those wishing to honor Ada's memory with contributions, please make those to Morgan Baptist Church, 119 East Church Street, Morgan, GA 39866.
