It is known that she came from a prominent Rhode Island family, the daughter of Commodore Esek Hopkins (the commander of the first naval fleet funded and organized by the Continental Congress in 1775.) She was also the niece of Stephen Hopkins, the former Royal Governor of Rhode Island and first Brown University chancellor. She married Jonathan Maxcy in 1791 in Providence, Rhode Island.
