AN OLD LANDMARK GONE
Dr. Eli S. Penney died at his home in this city Tuesday morning, January 1, 1907, after a lingering illness of many months of Bright's disease.
The funeral services were held at the Baptist church at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C.C. Hatcher.
Dr. Penney was the eldest child of eleven children born to Rev. Eli and Polly Burris Penney. He was born at Frankfort, Ky., February 7, 1822. He received a thorough scholastic education and having a desire to understand and practice medicine his ambition was satisfied and his parents sent him to Dr. Carter's medical college in Kentucky where he was graduated, and afterward practiced his profession a number of years. In 1839 he moved with his parents to Missouri, settling on a farm near Far West. On February 12, 1844, he was married to Miss Mary Hill, of Liberty, Mo., daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Henry Hill. He purchased a farm adjoining that of his father where he lived a number of years. Selling this farm he then moved to Clay county where he lived a long period of years, afterward selling this farm and purchasing the John Buster farm located between Hamilton and Kingston which he farmed and engaged in stock raising until he moved to Hamilton in 1865 where he has since resided and been highly respected. To Dr. and Mrs. Penney five children have been born: Laura Burris, of St. Joseph, Mo.; Henry Eli, of Kansas City; Alice Chapel, deceased; George W., of Kansas City, and Octavia Bishop, of Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Penney was a man of intellectual attainments, quiet and retiring and modest in his manners. He was a successful financier, honest and upright in his dealings with his fellowmen. He was a convert of the Old School Baptist faith and a firm believer in the creed of that church. During his long and agonizing sickness he was cordial in his greetings to friends and neighbors and grateful for every little kindness rendered, often avowing he loved everybody. George Penney and Mrs. Bishop, being his only children in good health, attended their father in his illness and did all in their power to alleviate his sufferings. The community has lost a good and inoffensive old citizen. Peace be to his ashes.
