He was the son of McTilden "Big Mac" Atkins, Sr. and Esther Shelley Atkins. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, two sons, and two grandchildren.

From his obituary:

"Mr. Atkins grew up in Latta where he was actively involved in the Boy Scouts and earned the designations of God and Country as well as Eagle Scout, which is the highest awarded scouting honor. He graduated from Latta High School and The University of South Carolina. He was an avid tennis and basketball player at both the high school and collegiate level. He enlisted in the US Army, as well as the US Army National Guard. Mr. Atkins also spent several years as a Congressional staff member for United States Congressman John L. McMillan. After graduation from USC, he joined the Port Brokerage Company where he eventually retired as the Southeast Regional Director. Mr. Atkins was the Scoutmaster of Troop 411 for over 10 years and also held a leadership position with the Indian Waters Council. He was instrumental in the growth and development of many young scouts in the Chapin area where his children were raised. He was very proud of his two sons for both attaining the
rank of Eagle Scout."
