Elizabeth was born into the large family of Watemon Jones [1798] and Esther Stewart, both of whom were born and raised in Franklin County Virginia, a few miles south east of Rocky Mount.

Elizabeth was a rural girl, growing into young womanhood on father Watemon's farm about 5 miles s.w. of Waverly IL. When 18, on Nov 25 1853, she married John Gilbert Ashbaugh. They raised their family in the same vicinity and lived out their lives there. John and Elizabeth were neighbors of her brother Robert Augustus Jones and his family.

Mrs. Elizabeth Jones Ashbaugh, daughter of Waitman and Esther Jones, was born six miles southwest of Waverly, March 20, 1835, and died at her home in Waverly, March 24, 1916, being 81 years and 4 days of age.

Mrs. Ashbaugh was converted to faith in Jesus Christ at the age of thirteen years, and united with New Hope Baptist church in 1848. She was married to John Gilbert Ashbaugh in 1854.

Eleven children were born to this union, five dying in infancy; Charles Henry in 1889; Mrs. A. A. Harney, March 30, 1914; and Mrs. Albert Farrow, december 23, 1914. These surviving are: W. L. Ashbaugh of Waverly; F. E. Ashbaugh of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Mrs. Richard Morrell of Ottumwa, Iowa, together with her husband, J. G. Ashbaugh.

In 1870 Mr. and Mrs. Ashbaugh came to Waverly to live and after a few years she brought her letter and joined the local Baptist church. Her life has been one of faith, as well expressed in her favorite hymn, "How Firm a Foundation," which she requested to be used at her funeral.

Funeral services were held at the residence Sunday afternoon, March 26, 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Fred R. Johnson of the Baptist church officiated, assisted by Rev. F. E. Smith of the First M. E. church. Interment was in East cemetery.
