Jesse served with Co. D, 1st NC, Heavy Artillery. He enlisted in Wayne County, NC April 7, 1864 and served with Company D at Fort Fisher on the coast of NC. He was wounded and captured during the fall of Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865 and was transfered to Point Lookout, Md. where he died from his wounds.
