Despite never marrying, he dedicated himself to serving his country. He bravely fought in the Spanish-American War as a 4th Sergeant in the Goldsboro Rifles. However, his service came at a cost. He sustained injuries, including a fractured left femur and the loss of his little finger on his left hand. Tragically, he passed away at the Disabled Veterans Hospital in Hampton, Virginia. His sacrifice and commitment to duty will always be remembered.
