George was one of eight children for parents Hiram Lahners and Rienelt Decker. It is unclear if he was born in 1887 or 1888, there are sources for both dates. He married Edna Bassett on February 27, 1912 in Noble County, Indiana. They had three children: Edna; Irwin; Basil. He was employed as a locomotive fireman in Chicago in 1920.
