Burkett's Company I, 5th California Infantry, at Camp Union, Sacramento, California, December 16, 1861. Private McMahon was transferred to Captain Henry M. Benson's Company F, 1st Battalion, Veteran California Infantry, November 28, 1864. He was mustered-out due the expiration of his term of service at Las Cruces, New Mexico Territory, December 16, 1864. Thomas McMahon enlisted at Los Cruces December 29, 1864, and mustered in as private of Captain Charles P. Nichols' Company C (New), 1st California Cavalry, at Franklin (now present-day El Paso), Texas, February 8, 1865. Private McMahon mustered out at San Francisco, California, December 31, 1866.
