Leonard E. Watters, 97, of Dubuque, formerly of La Motte, Iowa, died Monday, May 18, 2009, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 22, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Otter Creek, Iowa, with the Rev. James Chappell and Deacon Bob Head officiating. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, Otter Creek. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, where will be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on Feb. 9, 1912, in Petersville, Iowa, son of James Leonard Watters and Theresa Gertrude (Costello) Watters.

He married Dorothy B. Hildebrand on Dec. 5, 1940, in Petersville; she preceded him in death on Oct. 31, 1987. Together, they farmed all their married life and raised six children. Most of the years of farming were in the rural Otter Creek area.

He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Otter Creek.

Leonard's greatest pride and interests were his family, friends, neighbors and farming.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his six children, Betty Elliott, of Martinez, Ga., Richard (Carol) Watters, of Davenport, Iowa, Doris McDaniel, of Nacogdoches, Texas, Madonna (Jim) Henkel, of Kellogg, Iowa, Nancy (Bob) Pitts of Davenport, and Leanna (Berny) Brune, of Peosta; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; a sister, Frances Hovey, of De Witt, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Loretta Cleary; three brothers, Charles, LeRoy and Paul Watters; and a grandson, Robert Watters.
