The fifth of the six children of Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Grant, he was the brother of President Ulysses S. Grant.

He had been a businessman in Chicago, Illinois, and lost everything in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. That and subsequent further losses greatly affected his mind, and when he died he had been an inmate of the New Jersey State Asylum for the Insane in Morris Plains, New Jersey.This may be a cenotaph.
