Brethren Church is Beautiful Setting for Marriage Ceremony

The Brethren church near Darlow was the scene of a beautiful wedding last evening when Violet J. Roberson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Roberson of Darlow, and Mr. Clarence D. Emery, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Emery of Castleton, were united in marriage. Rev. Earl Myers of the Brethren church spoke the marriage vows.

The spring colors of pink and white made the church a bower of beauty. Preceding the ceremony, Miss Edna Showalter sang “I Love You Truly,” accompanied at the piano by Miss Lucile Hornbaker. Miss Pearl Dunn and Mr. Harold Fountain, a cousin of the groom, sang a duet, “The Bells of St. Mary’s,” with Miss Alice Bridgeman playing the piano accompaniment. The three latter young people are of Abbyville.

To the strains of Lohengrin’s “Wedding March” the party entered the church, and during the ceremony “Oh Promise Me” was softly played by Mrs. Ruby McNeil, violinist, and Miss Hornbaker at the piano.

The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her father, was gowned in heavily beaded satin crepe, her veil being held in place by three strands of pearl across the front and three in the back. On each side was a charming arrangement of sweet peas. With this she wore white footwear, and carried an arm bouquet of sweetheart roses and sweet peas.

Miss Minnie Roberson, sister of the bride, attended the young couple as maid of honor. She wore a frock of orchid crepe and carried a bouquet of sweet peas of pink and white. The brides maids were Miss Wilma Roberson, a sister of the bride, Miss Elsie Emery, a sister of the groom, Miss Norma Finfrock and Mrs. Edna Tucker. They wore lovely frocks to correspond with the general color motif, and carried bouquets of sweet peas.

The groom was attended by Mr. Lester Clark. Ushers were Mr. Donald Sellers, a student at the Salt City Business College of Hutchinson, Mr. Herbert Emery, a brother of the groom, and Mr. Morris Tucker.

The little flower girls were Irene Roberson, a sister of the bride and Lila Foulke, of Culbertson, a cousin of the groom. Little Thomas Roberson, a brother of the bride, carried the ring.

After the ceremony, the young couple received the congratulations of their friends at the parsonage, after which they left by motor for western Kansas and eastern Colorado where they will visit. They will be at home after May 1 at Castleton.

Mrs. Emery is a graduate of the Castleton high school with the class of 1926, having completed the four year course in three, and been valedictorian of her class. Mr. Emery graduated from the Castleton high school in 1924. He is owner of a meat market there. -- newspaper clipping, March 27, 1927, probably from the Hutchinson News.

THE BOOK OF MEMORIES

Mrs. Violet Emery, 73, of Hutchinson, Kansas, passed away on March 30, 1980, at Hutchinson Hospital after a five year battle with cancer. She was a member of the Friends Church, Past Noble Grand and Rebekah Lodge No. 28, Hutchinson Women’s Christian Temperance Union (W.C.T.U.) and Apple Lane Community Club.

She married Clarence Emery on March 26, 1927, at Darlow, Kansas. Throughout her adult life she was energetic and faithful in all her activities.
