James "Vonnie" Brackett, 82, of Williams Road in Drexel, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006 at Carolina Rehab Center of Burke in Connelly Springs following a short period of declining health.

He was born June 13, 1923, in Cleveland County, and was a son of the late Joseph Cullen Brackett and Myrtle Walker Brackett.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Hodge Brackett; a brother, Glen Brackett; a sister, Irene Jeffries, and a son-in-law, John M. Cline.

He was a former employee of Table Rock Furniture Plant No. 6, and retired after 35 years of service with Drexel-Heritage Furniture Company. "Vonnie" was an avid Blue Grass fan his entire life and spent many enjoyable hours listening to and playing music.

Mr. Brackett is survived by daughters, Yvonne Cline of Morganton, and Janice Faye Courtney and husband, Will, of Drexel; sisters, Aileen McFarland of Casar and Wilma Brackett and Margie Shelton, both of Morganton; a grandson, Michael Dylan Cline; a niece and number of nephews; and a friend, Lily Buff of Morganton.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Brackett officiating. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the funeral home on Monday. At other times the family will be at the home of Yvonne Cline.
