Vinton, Nov 17 – James Brody, one of the first white persons to settle in this county, died at the home of his son Everett, six miles northeast of here this morning, aged 84 years one month and 21 days. He came to this county from Ohio in 1845, at which time three-fours of the territory comprising Benton county was Indian lands. When he first came here he settled in the timber south of Marysville where he cleared a farm. In 1849 he got the gold fever and crossed the plains in search of the yellow metal but returned like many others with a wide experience and less of the gold than he took with him. He is survived by his son Everett with whom he had made his home on the old homestead since the death of his aged life companion a few years ago, Mrs. Rose Johnson of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Louise Elwood of Beatrice, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held tomorrow from his late home and interment will be in the family burial ground near old Wilmington.
