SMITHVILLE – Claves Arvel Grimes, 87, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at the Gilmore Memorial Hospital in Amory after a brief illness. He was a native of Itawamba County, a former resident of Eggville and a resident of Smithville since 1995. He was a retired butcher and worked at grocery stores in the Smithville and Mooreville areas. He was a member and deacon of the Church of God of Prophecy in Amory. He enjoyed reading his Bible, gardening, playing his guitar and driving his car.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Union Grove Church of God of Prophecy in Mooreville with the Rev. James Austin and the Rev. Mike Brazeal officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Inez Brazeal Grimes of Smithville; a daughter, Sue Frederick and husband, Robert, of Smithville; three sons, Arvel Grimes and wife, Sarah, of Gattman, Lawrence Grimes and wife, Barbara, of Nettleton, and Thomas Wayne Grimes and wife, Linda, of Tupelo; two brothers, Albert Grimes of Red Bay, Ala., and Arthur David Grimes of Tupelo; 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Ray Benton, Allen Benton, Robin Frederick, Mark Grimes, Michael Grimes, Bobby Head and Greg Grimes.

Honorary pallbearers will be his remaining grandsons, his granddaughters and his great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body will lie in state at Union Grove Church of God of Prophecy one hour before services Sunday.
