Theresa Sykes obituary, Wyoming Journal, Thursday, December 8th, 1910
(Provided by Barbara Jane Garrison)

Teresa McKeon was born in 1831. Her early life was spent with her parents in Belleville, Canada. She was married to Ralph F. Sykes in 1855. The first years of their married life were spent in Twinsburg, Ohio. At the opening of the war Mr. Sykes enlisted and the family moved to New York, to be with friends. Later they moved to Iowa, which has since been her home. Eight children were born them. They are: Mrs. Ella Vaughn, Elgin, Illinois; Mrs. R. F. Clark, Los Angeles, California; Mrs. John T. Wherry, Wyoming, Iowa; Mrs. P. W. Rowell, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. A. A. Vaughn, Wyoming, Iowa and Willard V. Sykes, Minneapolis, Minn. All these were permitted to be present at the funeral services except Mrs. Clark. Thirteen grandchildren also survive. One daughter, Mary Estella, died in the year 1860, at the age of one year and a son, Frederick R, in 1903. Mr. Sykes passed away at Oxford Mills on July 2nd 1901.

While living in New York Mrs. Sykes became a member of the Presbyterian church and later united with the M. E. church. She remained in fellowship with the church and with her Lord until death.

She was a woman of retiring disposition, but won strong friendships, because those who knew her well came to appreciate and prize her excellent qualities. She possessed a sunny, genial disposition, which bore the stress and strain of many cares, and did not fail her to the last. Her long serious illness gave sufficient opportunities for restlessness and impatience, but not complaints were ever uttered.
