AT REST
The subject of this sketch, Mr. Jacob Matter, was born Feb. 4, 1818, in Dauphin Co., Pa., and departed this life at his home in Naperville, Ill., Nov. 30, 1889, at the age of 71 years, 9 months and 25 days.
On the 267th day of Sept. 1838, he entered the marriage relation with Nancy Milliron, who survives him, and with whom he lived 51 years, 3 months and 3 days in blessed companionship, sharing each others joys and sorrows until the time for his departure came. This union was blessed with 6 daughters and 5 sons, all of them surviving their father with the exception of one daughter who preceded him in early childhood. Besides his affectionate companion and 10 children, he leaves 5 sons-in-law, 5 daughters-in-law, 20 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 2 brothers, 1 sister and a large circle of friends and acquaintances to mourn his departure and to follow him to the land of eternal rest.
In 1844 Mr. Matter came here with his family and settled on his homestead in Wheatland township, Will Co., Ill., where he resided since he came west, with the exception of the few years he lived at Aurora, Ill., and the last few years of his life, at Naperville.
(Two of his sons, Abraham and Elton, live on farms in Wheatland; Newton is editor and proprietor of the Illinoisan, at Wheaton; two sons, Isaac and Henry at Aurora; two of his daughters, Mrs. Givler and Mrs. Prof. Umbach, reside in Naperville; Mrs. Yaggy, wife of Rev. J. H. in Audubon, Iowa; Mrs. Bartholomew in Aurora and Mrs. Patterson on a farm in Wheatland.)
About 54 years ago our departed brother, when but a youth of 17 years, was hopefully converted to God and united with the Evangelical Church and distinguished himself as a devoted conscientious Christian, and for a number of years as a faithful officer of the church with the sainted father Yaggy as his yoke-fellow. But, notwithstanding that father M. through industry and economy had secured for himself and family a comfortable home, surrounded with healthy and industrious children and a faithful companion; notwithstanding that he commanded the respect of his neighbors and that the sunshine of Christianity illuminated his home, there was also a shadow overhanging it. There was a "thorn in the flesh." For a number of years father M. was afflicted with that dreadful malady called Bright's disease, which caused him much suffering and necessitated him to forego many social and religious enjoyments. The sufferings were increased as the disease progressed and the years went by until at last, under the strain of intense suffering, he ended his earthly pilgrimage in triumph and in the blessed hope of a glorious immortality. His sufferings he bore without a murmur or complaint. We glory in his triumph and in his rest.
