Mexican War: Company I, 2nd Illinois Infantry
Civil War: Company D, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers

Thomas Bennett came to the United States from Ireland in 1842. He enlisted as a private for 1 year at Chicago, Illinois, August 1847, for service during the War with Mexico and was mustered into Company I, 2nd Illinois Infantry. Private Bennett was mustered out at Alton, Illinois, August 1848 (Soldiers' Home Record). After the war he went to California and became a miner in Humboldt County (1860 US Census). During the Civil War he enlisted as a private for 3 years at Humboldt December 30, 1863, and was mustered into Company D, 1st Battalion, California Mountaineers. Private Bennett was mustered out May 20, 1865, at Fort Humboldt, California (Soldiers' Home Record). He moved to Nebraska where he filed for a Civil War veteran disability pension in Nebraska February 20, 1888, and received certificate No. 773,752 (Pension File, NARA). Almost one year later he married the widow, Mrs. Susan E. (Masemore) Zimmerman* at Beatrice in Gage County on January 15, 1889. Thomas and Susan resided for many years at McCook in Red Willow County before going to Winterset, Iowa, in March 1901 (1900 US Census). Soon thereafter Thomas went to Santa Cruz, California, leaving Susan in Winterset. He was a retired carpenter living at Santa Cruz when he was admitted to the Pacific Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, at Sawtelle in Los Angeles County on August 4, 1903. Thomas died at the soldiers' home later that same month and was buried in the adjacent National Cemetery. His soldiers' home record indicates he was 5' 9" tall with a light complexion. He identified his next-of-kin as his wife Susan, who was then residing 8 miles north of Winterset, Iowa (Soldiers' Home Record). After his death Susan returned to Beatrice, Nebraska, to live with her daughter, Mrs. Margaret A. (Keller) Vaught (1910 US Census). She filed for a Civil War widow's pension at Beatrice on November 30, 1903, and received application No. 795,522; a certificate number was not found (Pension File, NARA).

*Susan was the widow of Christian Zimmerman (1815, MD-Mar. 7, 1887, NE), with whom she had at least 5 children. Susan and Christian were married in Carroll County, Maryland, on November 9, 1869, after the death of Susan's first husband, Samuel Keller (Aug. 20, 1838, MD-Mar. 6, 1869, MD), with whom she had at least 3 children. Susan and Samuel were married in Carroll County, Maryland, April 5, 1860. In 1910 Susan claimed to be the mother of 12 children, with 3 children still living (1910 US Census)
